Private pilot licence cost in the UK: build a real budget
Published prices show why one headline cannot cover every learner. Fife Flight Centre estimates £17,000–£19,000 for its 50–55-hour scenario, excluding the examiner’s fee; West London Aero Club lists £270 per dual hour in a Warrior. Compare the included training and the extras.

Two published school examples
These are provider examples checked on 2 October 2026, not a national average, an endorsement or a quote for your own course.
| Provider and publication | Published price | What the figure covers |
|---|---|---|
| Fife Flight Centre, updated May 2026 | £17,000–£19,000 for its 50–55-hour scenario | Flying, enrolment, nine theory exams and skill-test aircraft hire. Examiner fee excluded; medical and other additional costs need checking separately. |
| West London Aero Club, 2026 rate sheet | £270 per dual hour in a PA28 Warrior; £2,550 for a ten-hour Warrior package | Wet rates with home landing fees. This is flying time, not a complete licence price; membership, tests, exams and other costs are separate items. |
The two figures answer different questions. Fife provides a training-and-fixed-cost scenario; the West London figure prices hours of flying. Multiplying an hourly rate by a regulatory minimum does not establish the final bill or account for every extra.
Minimum hours are not a total-price promise
The CAA’s current PPL(A) guidance, checked on 2 October 2026, specifies 40 hours of flight instruction, with a reduction to 35 hours possible on a course at an ATO approved for that purpose. It also sets solo and cross-country requirements. These are regulatory requirements with conditions, not a promise that every beginner finishes in the minimum time.
A school may offer a course package with a different number of hours. Ask what its approved course includes and what happens if you need further instruction. Do not assume an older 45-hour package and the current regulatory minimum describe the same quotation. Previous experience, training progress and course approval need the school’s assessment.
Ask for an itemised quote
| Cost item | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Dual and solo flying | How many hours of each are included, and what is the rate for additional hours? |
| Aircraft and instructor | Are both included in the advertised hourly rate? |
| Theory | Are teaching, materials, exam sittings and resits included? |
| Airfield charges | Are landing and other applicable charges included? |
| Medical and radio | Which appointments, training and tests are paid separately? |
| Skill test | Are aircraft hire and examiner charges included? |
| Licence application | Is the CAA fee included or paid directly? |
The published fee is only one part
The CAA’s licensing fees page lists £263 for initial PPL(A) or PPL(H) issue when checked on 2 October 2026. That is a licence-issue fee, not the price of lessons, the medical or the skill test. Check the current fee when applying.
Compare the same scenario
Put two quotes side by side using the same included training and the same extra-hour scenario. An inexpensive headline can become a different total when exclusions are added. Ask about payment stages, refunds and the consequences of interruptions before committing to a package.
