Free aviation tools
Handy tools for pilots, cadets, plane spotters and anyone who loves aircraft. They are free, there is nothing to join, and you are welcome to link to them from your club or group.
-
METAR and TAF decoder Paste an airfield weather report or forecast and see what every part of it means, in plain English. -
Crosswind calculator Enter the runway and the wind and see the crosswind and headwind in knots, gusts included, for both ends of the runway. -
Airport code lookup Type a code - LHR, EGKK, or whatever is on the mug - and get the airport it belongs to, the other code it carries, and the coordinates. -
Aircraft registration prefix lookup Type an aircraft registration and see which country it is registered in, or type a country to see its prefixes. -
Flight distance calculator Pick two airports and see how far apart they are in miles, kilometres and nautical miles, and about how long the flight takes with no wind. -
Phonetic alphabet translator Type a name, an aircraft registration or an airport code and see it spelled the way pilots say it on the radio, from Alfa to Zulu. -
Printable plane spotting log Make a clean A4 log sheet for a day of plane spotting, with your place and date at the top, and print as many as you need.
For clubs, squadrons and groups
Every tool here is free to use and free to link to. If you run a flying club, a cadet squadron, a radio club or a spotters' group, put a link on your website or in your newsletter. A decoded METAR can be shared as a link too: decode it, then copy the link. The crosswind calculator can go on your own site as well; the code is under the calculator.
