Aircraft art styles explained: blueprint, vintage poster, line, watercolour or oil?

There are six aircraft art styles to choose from when you upload a photo: keep it as a clean photo, or restyle it into a blueprint, a vintage travel poster, a line drawing, a watercolour or an oil painting. Eac…

Aviation gift ideas: what actually gets kept

The useful sorting for aviation gifts is not by price or by product. It is by how much you know about this person's flying, because that decides everything else.

    How do planes fly?

A wing holds an aircraft up by turning the air that flows past it. You'll see that explained two different ways, and NASA's position is that both are right.

  7. The sky

    How fast do planes fly?

NASA's own figure for today's larger airliners is roughly 600 mph, which it puts at about 80 per cent of the speed of sound.

  8. The sky

    How high do planes fly?

The band jet airliners cruise in runs from flight level 290 to flight level 410, roughly 29,000 to 41,000 feet. That's a regulated figure rather than a rule of thumb.

Plane spotting photography: getting a print-worthy shot

Most of your spotting photos are for you: the logbook in pictures. But every so often you get one that stops you, and that's the one that belongs on a wall. The gap between a snapshot and a frameable shot isn't…

Turn your plane photos into wall art

The short version: pick your sharpest, best-lit shot of the aircraft, upload it, then either print it true to life or have the AI redraw it as a blueprint, poster, line drawing or painting. Choose paper, canvas…

What are the main types of aircraft?

The families that matter are set out in regulation, and they're divided by one thing: where the lift comes from.

  15. The sky

    What is a cockpit?

The cockpit, called the flight deck on larger aircraft, is the compartment at the front where the flight crew sit and fly the thing.

  16. The sky

What is a knot in aviation?

A knot is one nautical mile per hour, and the international nautical mile is exactly 1,852 metres. Both figures are fixed by agreement, not by measurement.

  17. The sky

    What is a runway?

A runway is the paved strip an aircraft takes off from and lands on. The number painted at the end of it is not a name. It's a bearing.

  18. The sky

    What is an airport code?

Most airports carry two codes, not one. A three-letter code for the commercial side of aviation, and a four-letter code for the operational side.

  19. The sky

    What is plane spotting?

Plane spotting is watching, photographing and identifying aircraft, usually from public ground near an airport or under a flight path.

  20. The sky

    What is turbulence?

Turbulence is rough, irregular air that an aircraft happens to be flying through. It's a property of the atmosphere, not a fault with the aeroplane.

    Why are planes white?

You'll find three confident answers to this everywhere: heat, inspection and resale. We went looking for a regulator or a manufacturer that publishes any of them, and came back with nothing.

  22. The sky

Why do planes leave white trails?

They're contrails, short for condensation trails, and NOAA's description is about as plain as it gets: they form when water vapour from an aircraft's exhaust condenses and freezes into ice crystals.

    Aircraft gifts

This page is for the good case: you can name the aircraft. Not aviation in general, not planes as a subject, but one specific machine that matters to somebody.

    Aviation Christmas gifts

Every constraint that matters at Christmas here is a calendar one. Nothing is sitting in a warehouse, because nothing exists until somebody orders it.

    Aviation Father's Day gifts

Buying for a father has one advantage over every other case on this site, and most people never use it. You have access to the photographs.

  27. Product or collection

    Aviation gifts

Aviation is one category where shopping by product goes wrong. Almost everything here depends on who you are buying for and how much you know about their flying, so this page starts there.

  28. Product or collection

    Aviation gifts for men

Being a man tells you nothing about what someone wants. What this search usually means is something more useful: you know he is into aviation and you are short on detail.

  29. Product or collection

    Gifts for pilots

Pilots are given a lot of aviation-themed objects and keep very few. The ones that survive have a date or a place attached.

  30. Product or collection

    Gifts for plane lovers

The enthusiast who does not fly is the hardest of the lot to buy for, because their interest is deep and their shelf is already full.
