Birmingham Airport plane spotting: Car Park 5 and Sheldon

Birmingham Airport plane spotting has an official home: a free viewing area in Car Park 5, beside the perimeter fence and open 24 hours. When aircraft use runway 15, the airport points spotters to Sheldon Country Park instead.

The official aircraft viewing area in Car Park 5

The airport’s aircraft viewing area page describes a free, official spot within Car Park 5, next to the airfield perimeter fence, with signposts from the car park. It sits before security, so you don’t need a flight, and it’s open 24 hours a day. Seating and picnic benches face the runway.

The viewing is free; the parking isn’t. If you drive in and leave the car in Car Park 5, the airport’s normal turn-up car park prices apply. It also asks visitors not to park on nearby residential roads.

Birmingham Airport plane spotting rules

The airport says it doesn’t allow live streaming from the area without prior permission, and points to the Birmingham Airport Bylaws for everything else. Watching and photographing aircraft is what the area is for; a live feed is a separate request. This was checked on 14 October 2026, so look at the page again before a visit, because car park layouts can change.

Sheldon Country Park for runway 15 arrivals

Birmingham has one main runway, used in either direction, and the end in use decides where aircraft come in over the houses. For movements on runway 15, the airport names Sheldon Country Park as the alternative, with parking provided by Birmingham City Council.

The council’s park page gives the address as Ragley Drive, Church Road, Sheldon, B26 3TU, with the main entrance and car park off Ragley Drive. It says the park borders the airport and its viewing area lies just under a mile from the farm buildings, on foot only. Toilets are by the main building at Old Rectory Farm, which opens 10.30am to 5.30pm.

Which runway end is in use?

Aircraft take off and land into the wind, so the direction can change from one day to the next. What a runway is explains how the numbers work, and spotting apps show which way the traffic is flowing before you set off.

Birmingham airport code: BHX and EGBB

BHX is Birmingham on bookings and bag tags; EGBB is its ICAO identifier. For other days out, compare Manchester’s Runway Visitor Park, Heathrow and plane spotting around the UK.

A shot from the fence can go on the wall: the aircraft print restyles it with a free preview before you pay, and the airport code print opens with BHX filled in.
