Aviation questions

What is a runway?

A runway is the paved strip an aircraft uses to take off and land — long, flat and built to handle the weight and speed of aircraft rolling along it at pace.

Runways are numbered according to the compass heading they run along, rounded to the nearest ten degrees with the final zero dropped — a runway heading roughly 090 degrees (due east) is called Runway 09, and from the opposite direction, where it points roughly west, the very same strip is Runway 27. Aircraft always take off and land into the wind wherever possible, since a headwind helps lift build faster and shortens the landing roll, which is why the runway in use can change through the day as the wind shifts.

Behind every airport code is a runway like this one, and the runway itself is often the backdrop of the best spotting shots — the kind of clean, dramatic angle that holds up beautifully on a brushed aircraft metal print.
